Final Announcement

posted Aug 19, 2012, 12:15 PM by Joshua Bloom

All:

This is a FINAL announcement for the bootcamp for tomorrow.

LOGISTICS:

- We will start at 8:30am *sharp* in at 1 LeConte. Please plan on arriving from 8:05 to 8:15 to allow for time to register. It will be a packed house, so you might consider leaving jackets etc. at the top of the room. You should bring a printed version of your registration from Eventbrite or a mobile app from eventbrite with your registration keyed up (http://www.eventbrite.com/eventbriteapp/).

- The final schedule for the bootcamp will be posted by the end of the day today (http://www.pythonbootcamp.info/agenda). We expect to finish formal lectures/demos by about 4:30 tomorrow. People may want to stay and start their homework while others are still around to help.

- We cannot accept cancellations at this point from paid tickets. Please log into eventbite and transfer it over to someone else (http://help.eventbrite.com/customer/en_us/portal/articles/428584). If you have a free ticket you should cancel it (http://help.eventbrite.com/customer/en_us/portal/articles/581556-cancel-a-free-order-or-registration).

HELP:

- The non-virtual help desk begins at 3 today and continues until 5pm. It is at Brewed Awakening on Euclid (northside of campus). Bring your laptop!

- We'll also have a virtual help desk going at the same time, on the IRC Channel #pyboot. See

http://register.pythonbootcamp.info/preparation/installation-help-desk

for more info.

- If you are having weave installation errors, it's likely you dont have a compiler installed. Either install that (on mac, it's easiest to get Xcode) and then reinstall the enthought distro, or just forget about it (you wont need it for the bootcamp).

- If you are having mayavi errors on Mac, you probably installed the 64 bit version of the enthought distro. Problem should resolve if you reinstall the 32 bit version.

OTHER:

 - Please consider using public transportation to get to campus. Parking is terrible and you will get numerous tickets if you park on the street.

 - Dont forget your laptop and power cords tomorrow.

 - We'll supply the caffeine and food you need to get you through tomorrow. Sorry, we couldn't afford a case of 5 hour energy drink!

We look forward to a fun and productive 3 days with you all. Get a good sleep tonight! Tomorrow you'll be dreaming about indentations, snakes and spam.

Getting EPD Installed

posted Aug 17, 2012, 4:29 PM by Joshua Bloom

All:

Some good news. We've been given permission by Enthought, the makers of the EPD Python distro, to pass along the private URL for academic versions of the installer:

http://.... [redacted online. Contact us for the URL]

You may use the installers in that directory, even if you are not strickly at an academic institution. However, please do not pass this URL along to those not taking the bootcamp.

We'll send one more reminder email with last minute logistics on Sunday. Reminder that the in-person help desk is Sunday from 3 to 5 pm at Brewed Awakening (on Euclid, Northside of campus).

We'll you all bright and early on Monday, with the registration starting at 8:05 and the first lecture at 8:30 am sharp. Please caffinate ahead of time...the first coffee break wont happen until 10am.

Bootcampers!

The python bootcamp is just 5 days away. We're also super excited to meet and work with you all.

Registration/checkin will be open from 8:05am to 8:25am on Monday (August 20) and we start promptly with the first lecture at 8:30am in 1 LeConte.

Following the previous announcement, we want to make sure that everyone is doing ok with their Python installation. Many of you have emailed us already with questions. For those that can't get the issues worked out, we'll have an in-person help session on Sunday from 3 to 5 pm at Brewed Awakening (on Euclid, Northside of campus).

Please make sure your installation and testing is complete before Friday.

Some details about how to get help can now be found at:

You'll see we have an email and IRC chat conduit. Note also that this IRC chat room (#pyboot) will be open and staffed during the entire bootcamp so you can ask questions of the councilors in real-time. Also, #pyboot will be the official Twitter hashtag.

Have a good weekend, your last before you will call yourself a true pythonista,

Josh
ps.  If you are getting this message but cannot attend the camp, please let us know (even if you have already sent us an email)

Welcome and Very Important Registration Information

Aug 6, 2012

Dear Proto-Pythonista,

Welcome! This is the first of a few emails we expect to send in anticipation of the Python Bootcamp 2012, to be held in #1 LeConte from August 20 to August 22.

1) ACTION REQUIRED: We've had an overwhelming amount of interest this year and thus would like you each to formally register for the bootcamp through our Eventbrite site:

    http://pythonbootcamp.eventbrite.com/    (password: redacted)

Please do so by FRIDAY AUG 9 @ 5pm to save your spot. After this time we will be re-opening registration to the Berkeley/LBL community. YOU ARE NOT GUARANTEED A SPOT UNTIL YOU SIGN UP at  http://pythonbootcamp.eventbrite.com/

All students (both of the undergrad and grad variety) are free but this year we're asking non-students to kick in $35/day ($105/total) to help defray costs.

2)  If you haven't already, please look at the preparations page (http://www.pythonbootcamp.info/preparation) where you'll see information on what you need to bring and what you need to do in advance of the bootcamp. The makers of our preferred python distribution, Enthought, have recently released a new version (7.3-2) with several software version bumps (importantly, ipython 0.12.1). You are encouraged to use this distribution for the bootcamp. We'll provide hands-on support in about a week's time for those that are having difficulty with the installation process (to be announced in a future email).

3) This is also the time to start working through the official python tutorial if you haven't already:

   http://docs.python.org/tutorial/

4) We still have some spaces available for the semester-long seminar "Python Computing for Physical Science" which is an in-depth follow-on to the bootcamp. The seminar (AY250; CCN 06082) will meet in HFA-B5 on Tuesdays from 2-5PM. Consider enrolling through the normal channels.

That's it for now.

Josh, on behalf of the Camp Counselors
